Former Central Connecticut men's basketball great Corsley Edwards was selected in the BIG3 Basketball League on Thursday night. Edwards, a 6-foot-9 forward, was selected by the Ball Hogs with the No. 7 overall pickof the draft.
"It's a blessing and a feeling of being able to get back at it," Edwards said after being selected. "It's wonderful to be able to play with a group of guys I've been around and have been supportive of each other."
The 3-on-3 professional basketball league, co-founded by Ice Cube, is slated to begin its second season on June 22 in Houston, TX, and have its games broadcast on FS1. The eight-team league will play an eight-week regular season with the playoffs beginning on August 17. The championship will be played on August 24 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY, and be televised on FS1.
Edwards, a 2011 inductee into the CCSU Alumni Athletics Hall of Fame, completed one of the most successful careers in CCSU men's basketball history in 2002 with his second Northeast Conference title and second trip to the NCAA Tournament. He also helped lead the Blue Devils to the NEC title and NCAA Tournament in 2000. He was named the 2002 Northeast Conference Pllayer of the Year and ranks third all-time at CCSU in scoring (1,731) and seventh in rebounds (967). Edwards was a three-time All-NEC selection, including a First Team pick as a junior and a senior.
"Everything is possible," Edwards added. "It doesn't matter how big of a school you come from, but use it as a platform to get to where you want to go. Just know, you can make it. I still follow CCSU closely and keep track of the team and how they're doing, I'm a Blue Devil for life!
Following his time with the Blue Devils, Edwards was selected in the second round of the 2002 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings. He played with the New Orleans Hornets during the 2004-05 season and was also the first pick in the 2006 NBA D-League draft by the Anaheim Arsenal. He played in professional leagues overseas before becoming an assistant coach for the Denver Nuggets in 2014 and was most recently named an assistant coach with the Greensboro Swarm of the NBA G-Leauge.
