Men's Basketball Visits Monuments in Nation's Capital
The Blue Devils are back in action on Saturday afternoon at Mount St. Mary's
The Central Connecticut men's basketball team was able to take advantage of a break in the schedule to visit Washington, DC, on Friday before its game at Mount St. Mary's. The team was able to take time to see sights such as the White House, the Lincoln Memorial and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial.
"It's important to learn about and see parts of our country's history in Washington, DC, because a lot of our guys haven't seen them before," said head coach Donyell Marshall. "Abraham Lincoln obviously played a very important part in our history and with Martin Luther King day coming up, it's another important period in our history. The more our team can get out and learn about life and culture it broadens their minds."
CCSU had a late practice scheduled for Friday and had the opportunity to see the national capital, which for many was their first time seeing Washington, DC. The team's first stop was to see the Lincoln Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on the National Mall. They were also able to walk through the Korean War Veterans Memorial and observe the Washington Monument.
"Being from California we don't have a lot of chances to see places on the East Coast and this was my first visit to Washington, DC," sophomore Harrison Kay said. "It was really great to see some of the history of DC and the chances times we can do little things like this that expose us to this stuff is really great."
The Blue Devils next visited the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial and could view the Thomas Jefferson Memorial across the Tidal Basin. At the MLK Memorial, the team had the opportunity to take in the inscription wall, which includes excerpts from many of King's sermons and speeches.
"My favorite monument to visit today was the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial because of everything it stands for and everything he did for our country," senior Shakaris Laney said. "It was good to be able to see the monuments with the team and the guys really enjoyed the opportunity."
The team also was able to see the White House and as take a photo as a team, as they did at each of the sights visited.
