Men Fall to 0-2 in NEC Play With Loss at Sacred Heart
Blue Devils play on the road at the Mount on Thursday at 7 p.m.
The Central Connecticut men's basketball team dropped to 2-13 overall and 0-2 in Northeast Conference play with a 75-66 loss on the road at Sacred Heart on Monday night. Sophomore Matt Mobley scored a career-high 32 points in the loss, including 28 in the second half.
Sacred Heart climbed out to a 34-14 lead in the first half by hitting 14-of-24 from the field to start the game and turning six Blue Devil turnovers into 12 points.
Central answered with a 9-4 run to end the half and cut the Pioneer lead to 38-23. Sacred Heart made just 1-of-8 from the field to end the half but still shot 15-of-32 (46.9 percent) and led by 15. The Blue Devils shot just 10-of-32 form the floor, good for 31.3 percent and was 0-of-5 from three. Junior Brandon Peel had 10 on 5-of-7 shooting and Seymour had seven points on 3-of-8 shooting from the floor. The rest of the Blue Devils were 2-of-17 from the field in the half.
Sacred Heart used a 7-2 run to begin the second half to build the lead back to 20, 45-25, with 17:11 on the clock. The Pioneers hit 3-of-4 from the field to begin the half, including five points and a three from Tevin Falzon.
Sophomore Matt Mobley, who made just 1-of-10 to start the game, hit a pair of threes and a pair of free-throws to push CCSU to an 8-0 run and cut the lead to 45-33 with under 16 to play.
Down 53-37 Mobley led a 7-0 run by the Blue Devils to cut the lead under 10, 53-44, with 11:51 on the clock. Mobley hit his fourth three of the half and cut the lead to 57-49. He made five straight shots and had 18 in the first 10 minutes of the half.
Mobley continued to remain hot from the outside, hitting his fifth three of the game with 6:21 left in the game and cutting the Sacred Heart lead to 66-57. The five threes matched a career-high and gave him 10 in the last two games.
The Pioneers answered again, however, and climbed back to a 71-57 lead with five straight points, four of them coming from Falzon. A three-point play from Mobley cut it to 10, 71-61, with 2:05 to play. His sixth three of the game made it 71-64. The Blue Devils would get no closer than seven the rest of the way.
Mobley finished the game with a career-high 32, including 28 in the second half. He hit a career-high six threes. He was 9-of-21 from the field and 8-of-10 from the line. He hit eight of his final 11 shots from the field.
Peel finished the game with 11 points and eight rebounds. Senior Faronte Drakeford added 10 rebounds, his second straight game with 10 or more boards.
The Blue Devils return to action on Thursday night on the road at Mount St. Mary's beginning at 7 p.m. They will then return home for three straight leagues games beginning with Robert Morris on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in Detrick Gym.
