Head men's basketball coach Howie Dickenman has announced that defending Northeast Conference Player of the Year Ken Horton has been named the captain of the 2011-12 men's basketball team.
Horton had one of the best single seasons in Central Connecticut history in 2010-11, his junior season. He became the fifth player in school history to be named the NEC's Player of the Year after averaging 19.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game.
"Kenny proved what kind of leader and player he is during his junior season," Dickenman said. "After coming back from an injury I think some of us were unsure what to expect. Once he felt 100 percent, Kenny played with the passion and drive we look for in all of our players. Next year's team will be strong because of the leadership he will provide."
Horton posted 12 double-doubles in 2010-11, and scored more than 20 points 14 times during the season. He reached the 30 point mark three times, including a career-high 35 points at home vs. Quinnipiac on Feb. 19. He posted career-highs in points (606), rebounds (275), assists (60) and steals (44) and shot 49.2 percent from the floor and 37.6 percent from three. His 59 threes led the team as did his 159 free-throws.
Central will open the 2011-12 season on Nov. 11, 2011 at 8 p.m. in the annual Connecticut 6 Classic vs. Yale at the Mohegan Sun Arena. The full schedule will be announced in the coming months.
