Football Runs Winning Streak to Six With Big Win Over Saint Francis
Blue Devils travel to Duquesne next Saturday on ESPN3
The Central Connecticut football team, fueled by four caused turnovers from the CCSU defense, ran its winning streak to six games and moved to 4-0 in Northeast Conference play with a 28-10 home win over Saint Francis University on Saturday. The winning streak is the longest for the Blue Devils since they also won six games in a row during the 2009 season.
During the six game winning streak the Blue Devils have outscored their opponents 245-111. The Blue Devils are now +13 in turnovers during their six game winning streak. They caused four turnovers in Saturday's win.
The Blue Devils went down the field on their first drive but an attempted field goal was blocked by the Red Flash. On the first play from scrimmage junior Kenneth Keen forced a fumble on a sack and the ball was recovered by senior Chad Woodfine. Central needed just three plays as sophomore Drew Jean-Guillaume ran it in from six yards out for the score and the 7-0 lead. It marked the sixth straight game that Jean-Guillaume scored a touchdown for CCSU.
The defense caused its second turnover of the game, this time an interception from senior Najae Brown, that led to the second score of the game for CCSU. Senior Cameron Nash rushed it in from 11 yards out to cap a quick nine-play drive that went 47 yards and the Blue Devils led 14-0 with 10:52 left in the second quarter.
The Red Flash cut the lead to 14-7 with 5:03 left in the second quarter. Avery Miliner ran it in from four-yards out to cut the Blue Devil lead in half.
Saint Francis cut the lead to 14-10 with a 30 yard field goal from Eric Bofenkamp on the first possession of the third quarter.
The Blue Devils pushed the lead to 21-10 on a touchdown pass from junior Jacob Dolegala to Jean-Guillaume with 10:02 left in the fourth quarter. The drive came after the third turnover by the Blue Devils defense on the day, as sophomore linebacker Mike Mushaw forced a SFU fumble on a sack to end the third quarter. All three touchdown drives by the offense in the game came after the defense forced a turnover.
The fourth touchdown came again from the defense, as Brown recovered a SFU fumble, which was caused by senior Carlton Nash, in the end zone for a touchdown and a 28-10 lead with three minutes to play in the game.
The Blue Devil defense held the Red Flash to only 123 yards of total offense in the game and just eight first downs. They had only 32 yards passing and All-American wide receiver Kamron Lewis was held to four catches and 26 yards.
Senior Randall Laguerre and Carlton Nash each had seven tackles to lead the defense. Nash forced a fumble and had a tackle for a loss in the game. The defense had five sacks in the game, two of which led to turnovers.
The defensive touchdown for the Blue Devils was the sixth of the season which leads all of FCS. They have scored twice on fumble recoveries and four times on interceptions returns this season.
Nash became the seventh player in school history to rush for over 2,000 yards and finished the game with 21 rushes for 93 yards and a touchdown. Jean-Guillaume scored twice, once on the ground and once on a catch. Dolegala finished the game 15-of-22 for 131 yards and a score.
