#5 Youngstown State Tops Football on the Road on Saturday
CCSU returns home to play Walsh next Saturday at 12 p.m.
The Central Connecticut football team dropped a 59-9 decision on the road at #5 Youngstown State on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Devils return home next week to play Walsh University at 12 p.m. at Arute Field.
The Blue Devils, now 0-3 on the season, played one of the toughest schedules in the country in the first three games of the season. They lost the opener at ACC and FBS member Syracuse, then at home to #22 Fordham and then on the road at #5 Youngstown State. They'll play their second of six home games this season next Saturday at noon.
The Penguins took a 7-0 lead on a 60-yard touchdown run from Tevin McCaster with 4:34 left in the first quarter. The Blue Devil defense had stopped the Penguins on a fourth down on their first offensive drive, but on their second they needed just one play to take the 7-0 lead.
Following a CCSU punt, YSU went 51-yards on seven plays and took a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Christian Turner ran it in from three yards out for the score.
The lead reached 21-0 on a 39-yard scoring run from quarterback Nathan Mays with 10:01 to play in the second quarter. The scoring drive covered 75 yards. The lead reached 28-0 with 6:34 to play in the second quarter on a one yard touchdown run from Shane Kuhn. The big play in the drive was a 48-yard rush from Mays that drove the ball to the one yardline.
Youngstown scored on its first drive of the third quarter to push the lead to 38-0.
The Blue Devils got on the board on the next drive of the third quarter as senior Cameron Nash rushed it in from five yards out to cut the lead to 38-6. The extra point was blocked. The CCSU scoring drive went for nine plays and 78 yards.
Youngstown answered with a scoring drive that took eight plays and went 73 yards to push the lead to 45-6.
Senior Frankie Palmer kicked a 37-yard field goal with 7:17 left in the fourth quarter to make it 59-9.
Junior quarterback Jacob Dolegala finished the game 11-of-24 for 93 yards and an interception. He rushed five times for 26 yards. Nash rushed for 62 yards and the one touchdown.
The defense was led by senior Najae Brown who finished the game with a team-high 10 tackles for the Blue Devils.
The Blue Devils return to Arute Field next week to host Walsh at 12 p.m.
