Football Falls on the Road at Stony Brook
Blue Devils return home next weekend to host Bowie State
The Central Connecticut football team fell to 0-2 on the season with a 38-9 loss on the road at Stony Brook on Saturday night. Central struck first on their opening drive of the game, but the Seawolves held them to three points the rest of the way. The Blue Devils return home next Saturday night to host Bowie State at 7 p.m. on Arute Field.
The Blue Devils struck on their opening drive of the game when freshman Jacob Dolegala threw a slant pass to sophomore Xavier Jenkins that bounced in and out of the hands of the receiver. Junior Dan Hebert was in the right place at the right time, and caught the bouncing ball and ran for the 51-yard touchdown. Central had a penalty on the extra-point and led 6-0.
The Seawolves responded with an 11-play, 76-yard drive to take a 7-6 lead with 7:57 left in the first quarter. Stacey Bedell rushed for the eight-yard touchdown and had 51-yards rushing on the drive to give the home team the lead.
Stony Brook missed a field goal on their next drive and the game remained 7-6 through the first quarter. The teams traded punts until late in the second quarter, when Central committed its first turnover of the season.
The Blue Devils fumbled on their first play of a drive late in the quarter, and gave the Seawolves the ball in the red zone, at the CCSU 19-yardline. The Blue Devil defense held Stony Brook to the field goal and the SBU lead was 10-6 with 3:41 left before halftime.
Following a Blue Devil punt the Seawolves put seven more on the board just before halftime to take a 17-6 lead. Bedell's second rushing touchdown of the game capped a five-play drive that covered 58 yards in just 1:24.
The Seawolves struck again on their first drive of the second half. Quarterback Joe Carbone ran in from two yards out to complete a 57-yard drive and open a 24-6 lead for Stony Brook.
Bedell's third rushing touchdown of the game made it 31-6 with 3:19 left in the third quarter. The drive started following an interception of Dolegala, his first of the season, and went for 12 plays and 84 yards.
Junior Matt Braddock posted an interception midway through the third quarter and it led to a 35-yard field goal from junior Ed Groth, his first field goal of the season. It made the score 31-9.
Malone's second rushing touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter made it 38-9 Stony Brook.
