Football Welcomes Wagner on Saturday
The Central Connecticut football team will kickoff with the Seahawks at 1 p.m. on Arute Field.
It's the final weekend of October and Northeast Conference play is in full gear as the Blue Devils host the Seahawks of Wagner College at Arute Field on Saturday, Oct. 25. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The contest is the fourth of six scheduled home games at Arute Field this season. The Blue Devils will also host Sacred Heart on Nov. 8 and Howard on Nov. 15.
Series History • This is the 27th meeting between CCSU and Wagner with the all-time series evenly split at 13-13. CCSU won last year's meeting at Hameline Field after the Seahawks won in New Britain in 2012. This series began in 1937 with Wagner and CCSU meeting each year up until 1941. CCSU did not have a football team over the next four years because of World War II and the series did not resume until 1993. Since 1993, these programs have met every season. Recently, the Blue Devils have held the advantage winning eight times in the last 10 seasons.
Hollomon Sets CCSU Career Rushing Mark • With a short run up the middle late in the second quarter last week, senior running back Rob Hollomon became the Blue Devils' all-time leading rusher. Hollomon passed former Blue Devil Stan House's (1994-97) record of 3,347 yards on the play. He added to his total in the second half and enter's today with the program record set at 3,430 rushing yards.
Another ESPN3 Opportunity • Thanks to the Northeast Conference's television package the CCSU game against Bryant on November 1 will also be available to watch live on ESPN3.com. Fans should note that CCSU's game at Bryant on Nov. 1, which will air on ESPN3, will not be available to watch on NECFrontRow.com.
SanGiacomo's 3,000 • Junior quarterback Nick SanGiacomo has thrown for 1,343 yards this season and 3,806 in his career. With his 77th passing yard last week at Robert Morris he moved past Bill Van Klock (3,776) for fourth place on CCSU's career list. Scott Dolch (2001-04) holds the all-time record of 5,728. Next up for SanGiacomo is Sam Tirone (1992-94) who threw for 4,413 yards in his career.
Hollomon Moving up the Scoring List • Senior Rob Hollomon became CCSU's all-time leader in rushing yards last week, but he is also moving up the career scoring list. Stan House's all-time record of 288 (48 touchdowns) is safe for now, but Hollomon (192) enters the day just 14 points behind James Mallory (206) for the second spot on the career list.
Last Year's Meeting • The Blue Devils traveled to Staten Island and defeated Wagner 52-17 last season with Rob Hollomon rushing 24 times for 147 yards and a career-high four touchdowns. Hollomon was not stopped for a loss on any of his 24 rushing attempts. Quarterback Nick SanGiacomo had one of the most efficient days in CCSU history as he connected on 22-of-25 passing attempts for 263 yards and three touchdowns. The Blue Devils led the Seahawks 17-7 at the half and increased the lead to 24-10 after three quarters. A Wagner score to open the fourth quarter made it a 24-17 game, but the Blue Devils scored four more touchdowns to break the game open.
Solid Up The Middle • The Blue Devil defense is allowing just 153.9 rushing yards per game, down from 203.6 yards per contest last year. A big reason for that is the play of freshmen nose tackles Landon Reecher and Justin Douglas. The duo have split time in the middle of the defensive line and done a good job limiting the running game, Blue Devil opponents are averaging only 3.9 yards per attempt this season, down from 4.6 last year.
Groth's Career Long • Sophomore Ed Groth connected for a career-long 33-yard field goal in the first quarter against Robert Morris.
