Football Falls in Home Opener
The Blue Devils will return to action next Saturday at Holy Cross. That game is scheduled to kickoff at 1:05 p.m at Fitton Field on the Worcester, Massachusetts campus.
The Central Connecticut football team fell to Albany by a score of 19-0 on Saturday night at Arute Field. The Blue Devils (1-1) were unable to generate any offense against the Great Danes (2-0) in the 2014 home opener. The game featured a one hour and 50 minute weather delay at halftime. Following the delay, the Great Danes scored the only two points of the second half.
Albany kicked a field goal with 8:44 left in the first quarter to open the scoring and then added two touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 17-0 lead into the break.
Both touchdowns came through the air as quarterback Will Fiacchi found Cole King for a 17-yard strike with 3:29 left in the quarter and then with 17 seconds remaining Fiacchi found King again, this time for a 27-yard scoring pass to take a 17-0 lead at halftime.
As the teams were about to enter the field for the second half, lightning was spotted in the New Britain area and the game was delayed. The two teams resumed play at 9:23 p.m., following the weather delay.
Albany added two more points in the second half on a safety. An errant snap on a punt attempt resulted in a safety as punter Ed Groth pushed the loose ball out the back of the end zone. The points would be the only ones of the half.
Defensively, safeties Chris Abner and Josh Celerin each totaled 10 tackles.
Sophomore Jevon Elmore recorded his first interception of the season when he picked off a Fiacchi pass in the third quarter.
Junior Nick SanGiacomo was 19-of-41 passing with no touchdowns and one interception.
Senior Tyrell Holmes caught seven passes for 60 yards. Senior running back Rob Hollomon was held to just 33 yards rushing on the night.
Albany's Omar Osbourne had 110 yards on 35 rushing attempts. The Great Danes out gained the Blue Devils 310 to 195 in total offense.
The shutout is the first for the Blue Devils since falling to Robert Morris, 14-0, during the 2002 season.
