Football Falls to Wagner, 31-13
The Central Connecticut football team fell to Wagner, 31-13, on Saturday night.
Junior quarterback Andrew Clements threw for a touchdown and ran for another score, but the Central Connecticut football team fell to Wagner by a score of 31-13. The Blue Devils generated a season-high 330 yards of total offense, but the Seahawks went for 271 yards and four rushing touchdowns.
The Blue Devils (0-4, 0-1 NEC) fell behind 7-0 on a three yard touchdown run by Nick Doscher.
Central answered two minutes later on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Clements to senior Anthony Julbes. The touchdown was the first of Julbes' career. The Blue Devils' extra point attempt was blocked and Central still trailed by a point.
The Seahawks (1-3, 1-1 NEC) David Lopez connected on a 51-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to extend Wagner's lead to 10-6 at the half.
On Wagner's second drive of the third quarter the Seahawks were able to extend their lead to 17-6 on a 27-yard touchdown run by Otis Wright.
Wagner added another touchdown in the period to extend their lead to 24-6 with 4:13 remaining in the quarter.
Clements cut the Blue Devils' deficit to 24-13 on a two yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. The touchdown was the third rushing score of the season for Clements.
It took Wagner less than two minutes to answer with a touchdown. Dominique Williams scored on 37-yard touchdown run, his second of the half.
That touchdown extended the Wagner lead to 31-13 and closed the scoring for the game.
Junior Rob Hollomonrushed 17 times for 64 yards. Clements ran 16 times for 63 yards and the touchdown. Clements also threw for a career-high 165 yards and a touchdown. He was 19-of-25 in the game.
Junior Denzell Jones caught eight passes for 52 yards and senior Deven Baker had 79 yards on seven catches.
Junior Antwione Reese and sophomore Tyrell Holmes both had a game-high nine tackles. Each had three solo tackles and six assisted stops.
A crowd of 4,515 filled Arute Field for the opening Northeast Conference game of 2012.
The Blue Devils will return to action at Sacred Heart next Saturday. The game will kickoff at noon and will air on Fox College Sports, Cox Sports and ESPN3.Com through NEC TV.
