Baseball Holds Off Wagner in Series Finale on Sunday

The Central Connecticut baseball team took its fourth Northeast Conference series of the season with a 5-2 win at Wagner on Sunday in Staten Island, NY.  The Blue Devils hit a pair of home runs in the game and got strong pitching from Jake Neuman and Luke Garofalo in the win, improving to 11-1 in NEC play.

Central will host Quinnipiac in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon.

KEY MOMENTS

• Elliot Good led off the third inning for CCSU by drawing a walk. Two batters later, Dan Hussey took a 2-0 pitch over the wall in right to make it 2-0.
• Wagner got a run back in the fourth. The Seahawks loaded the bases with no outs and a single by DiMaggio Cazares would drive in a run. The Blue Devils would benefit by doubling off a pair of runners on the play and escape further damage.
• Hunter Pasqualini led off the sixth inning and took the first pitch he saw over the fence in right field to make it 3-1.
• In the seventh, Cazares led off with a double for Wagner. He would score on a two-out single by Chris Conniff to make it a one-run game.
• CCSU tacked on a pair of runs in the ninth inning for insurance. After a single by Jeff Nicol and double by Mike Toriero, Jimmy Sullivan was intentionally walked to load the bases. Good followed with a two-run single to make it 5-2..

NOTES

• The Blue Devils own a 72-36 record against Wagner all-time and have won six of the past eight meetings.
• CCSU remains atop the league standings with a two-game advantage.
• Neuman won his third straight decision, tossing 5.2 innings. He allowed one run on seven hits and had a strikeout.
• Garofalo went 3.1 innings in relief for his fifth save of the season. He recorded four strikeouts and allowed one run on three hits.
• Torniero went 3-for-4 with a run scored. He has hit safely in seven straight games with a plate appearance.
