Baseball Opens Weekend Series With Win at Delaware State on Friday

The Central Connecticut baseball team won its fourth straight Northeast Conference game with a 4-1 win at Delaware State on Friday in Dover, DE.  The Blue Devils scored four unanswered runs and their bullpen tossed 3.0 hitless innings.

The teams will continue the series on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

KEY MOMENTS

• Delaware State opened the bottom of the first with a double by Trey Paige and a walk to Evan Bouldin. Nick Gnardellis would single through the right side to plate Paige and make it 1-0, but the Blue Devils would get out of the inning to avoid further damage.
• CCSU took the lead with two runs in the second. Ramon Jimenez led off with a single and scored on a double by Derek Hagher to tie the score. Following a single and a walk to load the bases with nobody out, Haughey would come home on a double-play grounder to make it 2-1.
• Jimenez led off the fourth with a triple and would score on a wild pitch to put Central ahead, 3-1. CCSU tacked on an insurance run in the ninth when Joe Rios doubled home Hunter Pasqualini to make it 4-1.
• The Blue Devils' bullpen took over for starter Dominic Niman in the seventh inning and locked down the win. Vincent Spizzuocco allowed a walk in his inning of work before Luke Garofalo retired all six hitters he faced to pick up his third save of the season.

NOTES

• Delaware State joined the NEC as an associate member ahead of the 2023 season.
• Dominic Niman started and went 6.0 innings. He scattered nine hits and allowed just one run, while ringing up two strikeouts with two walks.
• Garofalo has three saves in four appearances. He has allowed just one hit in 9.1 innings and has recorded 10 strikeouts.
• Spizzoucco has made four appearances on the season and allowed just one hit in 5.2 innings. He's not allowed a run and has four strikeouts.
• Jimenez went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
• Haughey and Rios each had a double and an RBI for the Blue Devils lineup.
