Baseball Wins in 10 at UMES, Sweeps Weekend Series

The Central Connecticut baseball team won, 5-4 in 10 innings, at Maryland Eastern Shore to sweep the opening Northeast Conference series of the season on Sunday in Salisbury, MD.  The Blue Devils rallied from a two-run deficit, scoring a run in each of the seventh and eighth innings before plating the winning run in the top of the 10th.

The Blue Devils play Stony Brook on Wednesday afternoon on Long Island.

KEY MOMENTS

• Aidan Redahan led off the game with a double to centerfield. He would score two batters later on a single by Joe Rios to make it 1-0.
• UMES had its first three batters all reach safely in the bottom of the first. Dillon Oxyer hit an RBI-double and Brantley Cutler singled home a run to make it 2-1.
• CCSU tied the game in the top of the fourth. Ramon Jimenez doubled to lead off the inning and he would score on a one-out single by Dan Hussey to make it 2-2.
• The Shore Hawks would load the bases with no outs in the sixth inning. Following a strikeout, Jason Brown doubled to right center to make it 4-2 before CCSU could get out of the inning.
• CCSU would get a run back in the seventh after Hussey singled and would eventually score following an error to make it 4-3. The Blue Devils tied the game in the eighth. Hunter Pasqualini led off with a double and moved to third on a sac fly. Jimenez would plate the tying run with a RBI-groundout.
• Central got singles from Jimenez and Derek Haguhey to open the 10^th. After a strikeout, UMES forced a fielder's choice that put runners on the corners with two outs. Elliot Good put the ball in play, but a throwing error on the play allowed Jimenez to come home and make it 5-4.
• Luke Garofalo, who came on in relief in the bottom of the sixth, would close the game by retiring 13 straight batters. He got a pair of groundouts and a fly out to seal the win.

NOTES

• UMES joined the NEC as an associate member ahead of the 2023 season. The Blue Devils have gone 4-0-1 in five meetings against the Shore Hawks since 2004.
• Garofalo got the win in relief and tossed 5.0 shutout innings. He allowed just one hit, while striking out four.
• The Blue Devils banged out 13 hits in the game with four batters collecting two or more hits.
• Jimenez went 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Redahan and Hussey each had two hits and a run. Hussey added an RBI.
• Haughey went 3-for-5 in the game.
• Elliot Good went 1-for-5 with a pair of runs knocked in.
• Jake Neuman started and threw 5.0 innings. He allowed four runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout, but he did not figure in the decision.
