Baseball Drops Home-Opener to Hartford, 8-5
The Blue Devils travel to Stony Brook for a three-game series beginning Friday.
The Central Connecticut baseball team lost its home-opener, 8-5, on Wednesday against Hartford at CCSU Baseball Field. Senior Chandler Debrosse had four hits, while classmate Dave Matthews added three hits and three runs batted in. Central slips to 2-6 on the season, while Hartford is now 4-3.
The Blue Devils are scheduled to begin a three-game series at Stony Brook on Friday at 3:00 p.m.

KEY MOMENTS
- CCSU tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first when senior Dave Matthews singled in junior TT Bowens.
- The Blue Devils took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third. Debrosseled off with a single and would score on a two-out homerun to right field by Matthews to give Central the lead.
- The Hawks took the lead for good with a five-run fifth inning. Jackson Olson singled in one run, while a wild pitch and a throw to second on a stolen base allowed two more runs to score. The Hawks added a pair of unearned runs with two outs.
- Central tacked on two runs in the seventh. Junior Matt Bertochi hit a solo homerun and Debrosse scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-5, but Hartford added an insurance run in the eighth inning.
NOTES
- CCSU is 12-11-1 in the series dating back to 2004, but Hartford has won the last four matchups.
- Sophomore Ron Grant started for Central, making his first appearance since tossing 5.0 innings against Dallas Baptist in the 2017 NCAA Regional. He allowed one earned run on two hits in 2.0 innings. He struck out one and walked two.
- Senior Michael Delease made his first appearance of the year and tossed 2.0 shutout innings.
- Matthews hit his first homerun of the season. He led Central with seven homeruns last season. Matthews finished 3-for-4 and his first multi-hit game of the year. He had 16 multi-hit games in 2019.
- Debrosse finished 4-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored. He has two straight games played with at least three hits.
- Bertochi hit his first career homerun with his solo shot in the seventh.
