Baseball Drops Non-Conference Contest at Albany Tuesday
Central travels to Mount St. Mary's for a three-game conference series beginning Thursday.
The Central Connecticut baseball team fell at Albany, 7-3, on Tuesday in a non-conference contest. The Great Danes scored four runs in the first two innings, while holding the Blue Devils offense at bay until the ninth inning to pick up the win. Central slips to 15-16 overall after the loss.
The Blue Devils are back in action with a three-game Northeast Conference series at Mount St. Mary's beginning Friday.
Albany got an unearned run in the bottom of the first to take an early lead before building on the cushion in the second inning. The first four batters in the inning reached base, with Kenny Hayden singling to make it 2-0. Nick Kondo and Kevin Donati would each drive in runs on a fielder's choice and sac fly, respectively, to push the Albany lead to 4-0.
Connor Takacs and Jack DePaolo-Boisvert would hold the Blue Devils at bay through the the first six-plus innings allowing no runs, while scattering seven hits and four walks.
The Blue Devils would leave runners on base in each of the first five innings. In the second, freshman Jack Nolan and junior Chris Kanios hit back-to-back one-out singles to put runners on the corners before Nolan was thrown out at home ending the Blue Devils' first scoring chance.
Central would leave a runner on third base in the third inning and had runners on first and second with two outs in the sixth and seventh innings, but could not bring a run home.
Albany added a run in the fifth inning and two more runs in the eighth, including an unearned run, to push its lead to 7-0.
Freshman Dan Covino walked to lead off the ninth and freshman Dylan Sanchez followed with a single to put runners on first and second. They advance a base on a wild pitch with one out, and a walk to sophomore TT Bowens would load the bases with one out. Covino would score on a wild pitch to get CCSU on the scoreboard. Juniors Buddy Dewaine and Dave Matthews hit back-to-back singles to each drive in a run and make it 7-3.
Freshman Tim Buchek started for Central and allowed only two hits in his 2.0 innings of work. The Blue Devils used five pitchers on the day in the mid-week contest, and combined to surrender just six hits.
Junior Chandler Debrosse had two hits at the plate for CCSU, while Matthews had two hits and an RBI.
