Baseball Falls in Finale at Furman on Sunday
The Blue Devils are scheduled to host Hartford in their home opener on Wednesday.
Central Connecticut dropped the series finale at Furman on Sunday, 9-1, in baseball action at Latham Stadium in Greenville, SC. The Paladins used a six-run sixth inning to take the rubber game of the three-game series against the Blue Devils.
The loss drops CCSU to 2-4 overall, while Furman moves to 6-5 on the season.
Central opened the scoring in the top of the second. Sophomore Buddy Dewaine laced a one-out triple and was driven in on a single by freshman Peyton Stephens to make it 1-0.
Furman tied the game with a run in the third inning. Logan Taplett led off with a triple and scored on an RBI-groundout by Bret Huebner.
The Paladins took the lead in the fifth inning. Huebner doubled down the line and scored on a single by Ben Anderson to make it 2-1.
Furman got back-to-back singles from Jake Crawford and Jason Costa to start the sixth inning. An error would move the runners up before Crawford scored on a sac fly to make it 3-1. A single would score Costa for the inning's second run. The Paladins would load the bases for Anderson who delivered a bases-clearing double. Anderson would score on a single by Sims Griffith to push the lead to 8-1.
Huebner hit a solo homer in the eighth to close out the game's scoring.
Stephens had two hits and an RBI for Central, while senior Dean Lockery went 2-for-4 at the plate as Central finished the day with six hits as a team.
Senior Brett Susi started for CCSU and was charged with the loss. He allowed just two runs in his 5.0 innings of work.
Grant Schuermann started and went 7.0 innings for Furman. He got the win, allowing just one run on five hits, while striking out six.
Anderson was one of four Paladins with two hits. He drove in four runs and scored another.
