Six Blue Devils Earn All-Star Honors in Summer Baseball
The Blue Devils have 16 players in summer leagues and six others playing professionally.
Midway through the summer, 16 current Central Connecticut baseball players are participating in college summer leagues and six former Blue Devils are playing professionally. Six Blue Devils have earned All-Star recognition thus far.
The current list of summer league players and a brief update (stats through July 11):
FUTURES COLLEGIATE BASEBALL LEAGUE
Tom Curtin - Bristol Blues
Curtin has posted a league-leading nine saves in 10 appearances and was named to the West Division All-Star Team. Across 10.1 innings he has a 1.74 ERA with 15 strikeouts against just two walks.
Mitch Guilmette - Bristol Blues
Guilmette has hit .356 in 14 games to help power the Blues' offense. He was named to the West Division All-Star Team via the fan vote having scored 16 runs with one home run and seven runs batted in.
Nick Garland - Brockton Rox
Garland earned a spot on the East Division All-Stars and has played in 15 contests for the first-place Rox. He is hitting .327 (18-for-55) with six runs scored and eight RBIs. He has four doubles and a homerun.
Dylan Maher - Nashua Silver Knights
Maher has played in two games since joining Nashua. He is hitting .571 (4-for-7) with three runs driven in and a run scored. He has one double.
Chris Kanios - Seacoast Mavericks
Kanios has played in 23 games and is 21-for-80 (.263) at the plate for the Mavericks. He has swatted three homeruns with two triples and three doubles. Kanios has five steals and 14 RBIs.
Ryan Schworer - Seacoast Mavericks
Schworer has tossed 12.2 innings in nine relief outings. He ranks second on the team in appearances and has struck out nine hitters.
NEW ENGLAND COLLEGIATE BASEBALL LEAGUE
Dean Lockery - Keene Swampbats
Lockery was named the starter for the North Division at shortstop. He is batting .323 and is second on the team with 20 runs scored in 23 games. He has seven extra-base hits, including three homeruns, and 10 RBIs.
Mike Appel - Mystic Schooners
Appel has worked out of the bullpen, tossing 12.2 innings in seven appearances with a 4-1 record. He has a 2.84 ERA and has nine strikeouts, while allowing just 10 hits.
TT Bowens - Mystic Schooners
Bowens played in 10 games and hit a pair of homeruns. He had four runs scored and four runs batted in to go with a stolen base.
Buddy Dewaine - Mystic Schooners
Dewaine has been a two-way contributor for the Schooners. In two appearances on the mound, he has yet to allow a run and has struck out two batters in 2.0 innings. He has had two at bats at the plate.
Ron Grant - Mystic Schooners
Grant has made four starts, posting a 1-2 record. He has worked 14.0 innings and struckout eight batters.
Jared Gallagher - Mystic Schooners
Gallagher has come out of the bullpen six times and tossed 9.1 innings. He has a 3.85 ERA with eight strikeouts against just three walks.
NEW YORK COLLEGIATE BASEBALL LEAGUE
Arik Sypher - Rome Generals
Sypher was named to the East squad for the NYCBL All-Star Game. In five outings, two starts, he has tossed 23.2 innings and posted a miniscule 0.76 ERA. He has 22 strikeouts against four walks and is 2-1 on the season.
PERFECT GAME COLLEGIATE BASEBALL LEAGUE
Michael Delease - Adirondack Trailblazers
Delease has made five starts in six outings, tossing 28.1 innings. He has struck out 17 batters, which ranks second on the squad.
Austin Salnitis - Utica Blue Sox
Salnitis has six relief appearances. He has thrown 8.1 innings and posted four strikeouts and a pair of saves.
SOUTH FLORIDA COLLEGIATE LEAGUE
Patrick Mitchell - Pompano Beach Clippers
Mitchell has helped the Clippers to a first-place standing in the South Division. In four outings, including one start, he is 1-0 and has struck out 10 batters in 8.2 innings and posted a 3.11 ERA.
VIRGINIA BEACH COLLEGIATE BASEBALL LEAGUE
James Jakuba - Fightin' Crabs
Jakuba and the Suffolk Fightin' Crabs have gone 18-8 and are in second-place. He ranks third in the league in first pitch strike percentage. In his last outing, July 10, he tossed 2.0 clean innings with a pair of strikeouts.
There are also Blue Devils currently playing in the professional ranks (stats through July 11).
Casey Brown (Lakewood BlueClaws - Philadelphia Class A) - Brown has tossed 17.2 innings in 12 relief appearances, going 2-1 with a 2.55 ERA. He has struck out 12 batters and limited opponents to a .253 average, while also having a string of six straight scoreless appearances.
Ryan Costello (AZL Mariners - Seattle Rookie League) - Costello homered in his first professional at bat for the defending league champions. He has started his season, hitting .289 in 12 games with 11 runs scored and 10 RBIs with two round-trippers.
Nick Neumann (Greensboro Grasshoppers - Miami Class A) - Neumann has gone 2-1 in 17 appearances, including one start, and tossed 27.2 innings overall this season. Since joining the Grasshoppers, he has a 3.24 ERA in 8.1 innings across four games.
Connor Fitzsimons (AZL Angels - Los Angeles Angels Rookie League) - Fitzsimons swatted his first professional home run on July 9, going 2-for-4 in the game. He has played in five games, thus far and is hitting .214. Defensively, he has a 1.000 fielding percentage and thrown out two baserunners.
Evan Scribner (Seattle Mariners) - Scribner has thrown in eight games this season, but is currently on the 60-day disabled list. He struck out six, while walking none, in 7.1 innings of work before his injury.
J.P. Sportman (Midland RockHounds - Oakland Double-A) - Sportman was named to the Texas League All-Star Game and went 2-for-4 leading the South to a 10-3 win. Through 83 games, he has hit .280 with 46 runs scored and 44 RBIs. Sportman has also added six home runs and 10 stolen bases.
