Costello Named Northeast Conference Baseball Player of the Week
The Blue Devils travel to Wagner on Friday to open a four-game series.
Junior Ryan Costello was named Co-Northeast Conference baseball Player of the Week it was announced by the league office on Monday. Costello helped power the Blue Devils to four wins last week, including a three-game sweep of NEC foe Sacred Heart, and shared the award with Bryant's Mickey Gasper.
The junior infielder batted a team-high .563 (9-for-16) and slugged 1.063, while reaching base at a .682 clip. He recorded at least one extra-base hit, one run scored and one walk in each of CCSU's four victories. In a mid-week victory over MAAC member Quinnipiac, Costello reached base six times (four hits, two walks) and scored five of Central's 24 runs. He homered, doubled and walked in the series opener against Sacred Heart on Saturday, May 6. Costello led off the third inning of the eventual 11-5 win by hitting his sixth homerun of the season. He doubled with one out and came around to score two batters later to break a scoreless tie in the fourth frame of Game 2. He also walked twice in the 9-1 triumph. He laced a two-run double that turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 advantage in the third inning of an eventual 9-5 win in Sunday's finale.

For the week as a team, CCSU batted .370 and pushed 53 runs across the plate. Central is currently 26-18 on the year and sits in second-place in the NEC at 15-5.
