Baseball Tops Sacred Heart, 9-5, on Sunday
The Blue Devils next travel to Wagner on Friday.
Central Connecticut topped Sacred Heart, 9-5, on Sunday in Northeast Conference baseball action. The Blue Devils took all three games in the series, scoring at least nine runs in each game, to improve to 26-18 overall and 15-5 in conference play.
Central collected 14 hits, with six players collecting at least two hits. Freshman Buddy Dewaine went 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs batted in.
Freshman Ron Grant got the win on the mound, allowing three runs in 5.1 innings.
The Blue Devils are back in action on Friday to open a four-game series at Wagner.
Sacred Heart opened the scoring in the second inning, taking advantage of three walks by scoringh two runs. Stephen Thibault would double in a run and Ted Shaw would bring home the second run to make it 2-0.
Central cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Dewaine sent a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left field to make it 2-1.
The Blue Devils batted around in the third with the first four batters all reaching safely. With two runners on base, junior Ryan Costello doubled down the right field line to clear the bases and make it 3-2. Freshman TT Bowens followed with a triple off the fence in right-center to bring home a run. Junior Mitch Guilmette would hit a sac fly to drive in Bowens and stretch the lead to 5-2.
Dewaine led off the fifth with a single and came around to score on a double by junior Nick Garland to make it 6-2. Senior Nick Landell followed with a single to drive in another run and make it 7-2. Senior Tyler Coleman doubled down the line in left to bring Landell around to score and push the lead to 8-2.
The Pioneers would cut the CCSU lead to 8-5 with three runs in the sixth, but Dewaine would drive in Bowens in the bottom of the inning to give the Blue Devils a four-run lead and close out the game's scoring.
Costello would finish the day with two hits and a pair of RBIs, while Bowens would finish with two triples and two runs scored. Coleman and senior Franklin Jennings each finished with two hits as well.
James Taubl took the loss for Sacred Heart. He allowed five runs in 2.2 innings of work.
The Pioneers would collect 10 hits as a team. Ted Shaw and Stephen Thibault each finished with two hits and two runs batted in.
The Blue Devils travel to Wagner for a four-game conference series beginning on Friday, May 12.
