Baseball Earns Split at Binghamton on Saturday
The teams will play a single contest on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Central Connecticut split a non-conference doubleheader at Binghamton on Saturday at the BU Baseball Complex in Vestal, NY. The Bearcats took the first game, 6-1, in nine innings before CCSU bounced back with a 3-2 win in seven innings in the second game.
Central moved to 22-17 on the season, while BU is now 21-9 overall.
GAME 1: Binghamton 6, CCSU 1
Binghamton would limit the Blue Devils to one run on three hits to win the first game of the day, 6-1.
Junior Dean Lockery led off the game with a homerun to give CCSU a 1-0 lead, but the Blue Devils would only manage a pair of singles after that.
BU tied it in the bottom of the inning after Justin Yurchak singled and came around on a double by Jason Agresti to make it 1-1. The Bearcats would then take the lead in the second after a single by CJ Krowiak would score Matt Tsukroff from second to make it 2-1.
A two-run homerun by Yurchak in the fifth inning pushed the Bearcats lead to 4-1. Binghamton tacked on two runs in the seventh. Eddie Posavec would single home a run and Agresti would bring home a run on a groundout to make it 6-1.
Lockery would finish 2-for-4 for Central, while junior Mitch Guilmette would account for the other CCSU hit.
Senior Brendan Smith started and went 4.0 innings for CCSU. He allowed two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk.
Nick Gallagher got the win on the hill for Binghamton. He allowed two hits in 6.0 innings and was charged with one run. He striked out two and walked two.
The Bearcats had eight hits as a team, led by Yurchak who went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.
GAME 2: CCSU 3, Binghamton 2
The Blue Devils would build a three-run lead before holding off a Bearcats rally to pick up the win in game two, 3-2.
Guilmette homered to lead off the second inning and put CCSU in front, 1-0. The Blue Devils would add to its lead in the fourth inning. Junior Ryan Costello singled to left field to open the inning and came around to score on freshman Buddy Dewaine's triple to left to make it 2-0. Junior Dylan Maher would single to right field with one out to score Dewaine and make it 3-0.
The Bearcats, after being held to two hits in the first five innings, would rally in the sixth. Krowiak walked with one and out and moved to third on a single. A single by Yurchak brought in a run to make it 3-1. With runners on first and second with two outs, Brendan Skidmore singled to left field to bring in a run and make it 3-2.
In the seventh, a two-out single by Darian Herncane and a double by Krowiak put runners on second and third. Sophomore Patrick Mitchell would come on for CCSU and induce a groundball for the final out to seal the Blue Devils' win..
The Blue Devils had six hits as a team and were led by Guilmette and Costello, who each went 2-for-3 in the second game with a run scored. Guilmette, Dewaine and Maher each drove in runs
Freshman Ron Grant started for Central and went 5.1 innings. He allowed two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
Posavec had three hits and a run scored for the Bearcats, who had seven hits as a team.
Nick Wegmann started for BU and took the loss. He went 5.0 innings and allowed three runs on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
