Baseball Completes Sweep With 11-3 Win at Mount St. Mary's Saturday
The Blue Devils travel to Siena on Tuesday.
Central Connecticut completed a three-game sweep of Mount St. Mary's with an 11-3 win on Saturday in Northeast Conference baseball action. The Blue Devils got home runs from senior Ryan Costello and freshman TT Bowens, while pounding out 12 hits as a team.
The win improves CCSU to 19-13 overall and 10-3 in NEC play, while the Mountaineers slip to 4-25 overall and 2-11 in the NEC.
Central is back in action with a non-conference game at Siena on Tuesday, April 18, at 3:00 p.m.
Costello finished the game 2-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and four RBI. He had a double in addition to his home run. Bowens went 4-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and three RBI. He added a double and two singles, along with a home run, at the plate.
Costello opened the scoring with a solo shot down the right field line in the top of the first inning. Junior Mitch Guilmette doubled to left center to knock in Bowens and make it 2-0.
Mount would tie the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Zach Hostetter doubled in Tyler Post to make it 2-1. Dalton Clouser would then single through the right side to score Vaughn Parker and make it 2-2.
The Blue Devils would regain the lead with a run in the top of the fifth inning. Junior Dean Lockery would come home on a Bowens single through the middle to make it 3-2.
Central exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning to take control of the game. Lockery delivered a bases-loaded single to score senior Franklin Jennings to open the scoring and make it 4-2. Senior Tyler Coleman followed with a walk to bring home junior Dylan Maher. Costello would clear the bases with a double to left center that pushed the lead to 8-2. Bowens followed with a two-run homer to push the lead to 10-2.
Mount would get a run back in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Jared Urban to make it 10-3.
Central closed out the scoring in the ninth with a sac fly from Maher that scored freshman Chris Kanios to make it 11-3.
Lockery would post a pair of hits with two runs scored and an RBI. Seven Blue Devils recorded hits in the game.
Sophomore Mike Appel started and went 4.0 innings for CCSU. He allowed two runs on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Jared Gallagher was credited with the win after tossing 4.0 innings in relief. He allowed one run on three hits with two walks and a strikeout. Sophomore Patrick Mitchell tossed a clean ninth inning with one strikeout.
Clouser and Parker each had two hits for the Mountaineers.
Seth Schubert took the loss for Mount St. Mary's, allowing three runs in 4.2 innings. He struck out four, while walking one and allowing six hits.
