Baseball Drops Quinnipiac, 6-3, on Wednesday
Central opens a four-game conference series at LIU Brooklyn on Friday.
The Central Connecticut baseball team picked up a 6-3 win over local rival, Quinnipiac, on Wednesday at CCSU Baseball Field. The Blue Devils pitchers held the Bobcats to just one run over the first 8.2 innings and took advantage QU miscues to pick up the non-conference win.
CCSU improves to 13-11 on the season with the win, while QU slips to 10-15 overall.
Central is back in action with a four-game Northeast Conference series at LIU Brooklyn beginning on Friday.
Quinnipiac opened the scoring with a run in the third inning. Anthony Cruz reached base with one and moved around to third on a stolen base and a single. Mike Palladino scored him on a sacrifice fly.
The Blue Devils scored two runs in the bottom of the third to go ahead. Junior Nick Garland reached on an error to leadoff and senior Nick Landell followed with a walk. The runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by senior Franklin Jennings before Garland came home on a groundout and Landell scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-1.
Central loaded the bases with no one out to begin the fourth inning. Junior Ron Jackson scored on a double play for the inning's first run. Garland followed with a double to score junior Ryan Costello to make it 4-1. Landell singled to bring Garland around and push the lead to 5-1.
Jennings manufactured a run in the seventh to add to the lead. He reached on a leadoff bunt single and worked his way around the bases, stealing second and then third, before scoring on a throwing error to make it 6-1.
The Bobcats closed the scoring with a two-out, two-run homerun from Liam Scafariello in the top of the ninth for the final margin.
Freshman Andrew Braun started for Central, allowing one run in 3.0 innings of work. He surrendered just two hits and struck out one. Freshman Arik Sypher tossed 6.0 innings in relief, allowing two runs on three hits.
Jennings had two hits to lead six Blue Devils who collected hits. Garland scored two runs and drove in another. Landell and freshman Chris Kanios each added RBIs.
Alex Vargas started and took the loss for Quinnipiac. He allowed five runs, three earned, in 4.0 innings of work.
The Blue Devils travel to LIU Brooklyn for a four-game Northeast Conference series beginning on Friday, April 7.
