Sportman Named NEC Baseball Player of the Week
Hit three home runs and drove in six last weekend
Senior outfielder J.P. Sportman was named the Northeast Conference baseball Player of the Week on Monday. Sportman and the Blue Devils split a four-game series on the road at Fairleigh Dickinson over the weekend.
Sportman raised his season batting average 44 points in a 2-2 trip to FDU. He went 9-for-15 with a 1.333 slugging percentage while hitting three home runs, posting five extra-base hits, and driving in six runs. He also scored five runs on the weekend.
The senior is now batting .330 on the year, good for second on the team, and leads the Blue Devils in slugging percentage (.481), hits (35), runs scored (19), home runs (3), RBI (13) and stolen bases (11).
Sportman started the weekend driving in three runs, including his first home run of the season, and a two-run double, in a 6-5 win over FDU on Friday. He was 4-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI in the win. In Saturday's first game Sportman went 2-for-4 with two home runs, three more RBI and two more runs scored in a 3-0 win.
He then went 2-for-3 in game two on Saturday and 1-for-3 with a run scored and a double in Sunday's loss. Sportman on-base percentage for the weekend was .625 and he posted 20 total bases in the four-game series.
