Blue Devils Top Holy Cross on Tuesday
Central is home this weekend with a weekend series vs. Sacred Heart
Junior right hander Tom Coughlin picked up his first win of the season and led the Central Connecticut baseball team to a 5-4 non-conference victory over Holy Cross on Tuesday afternoon. With the victory Central is now 14-12 overall on the season. The Crusaders are 14-17. The win is the third straight and the fifth in seven games for the Blue Devils.
Central scored a pair of runs in the third inning to take the early lead. Junior Anthony Turgeon reached on an error to lead off the inning and then scored from second on a single from senior Chris Renzoni. Junior J.P. Sportman drove in the second run with a single to left, making it 2-0.
The lead reached 4-0 in the fourth inning. With one out and men on first and second, junior Dylan DelaCruz doubled to deep right field to score both runs. It was his third hit of the day.
The Crusaders got a run back in the top of the sixth inning, making it 4-1.
An RBI two-out single from senior Mike Washburn pushed the Central lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh.
Holy Cross scored twice in the top of the eighth to cut the lead to 5-3. They added another run in the ninth.
Coughlin earned his first win of the season pitching 7.2 innings and allowing eight hits and three runs while striking out four Holy Cross batters. Junior Nick Boyd picked up his first save of the season, pitching the final 1.1 innings.
DelaCruz had three hits and his two RBI. Renzoni, senior Tyler McIntyre and Washburn each had two hits in the victory.
The Blue Devils return home this weekend beginning on Friday afternoon, hosting a weekend series with Sacred Heart at 3 p.m. The two teams will also play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
