Two in the Ninth Gives Baseball Fourth Straight Win
Ingham scores game-winner in the last inning
The Central Connecticut baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to come away ith a 6-5 home victory on Wednesday over Fairfield. The win is the fourth straight for the Blue Devils, who are now 8-7 overall. Fairfield falls to 7-12 overall with the loss.
In the bottom of the ninth Central loaded the bases with no outs in the inning. The first run scored on a fielding error by the third baseman, tying the score 5-5. The next batter, sophomore J.P. Sportman, fouled out to the first baseman. Realizing no one was covering the plate, sophomore Josh Ingham headed home from third, and avoided the tag to score the winning run, and give Central its fourth straight victory.
Central struck first in the second inning. With two outs senior A.J. Lowers walked and went to second on a single from Ingham. Both runners scored on a hard hit triple to center field off the bat of junior Bobby Migliazza.
The Blue Devils added a run in the fourth to make it 3-0. An RBI fielder's choice by Ingham scored sophomore Anthony Turgeon who had led off the inning with a single.
The Stags cut it to 3-1 in the fifth on an RBI single from catcher Sebastien Salvo.
Fairfield scored three in the top of the seventh inning to take a 4-3 lead. A two-RBI single from pinch-hitter Tyler Woslager scored a pair of runners who had walked to lead off the inning. The third run, which was unearned following a throwing error, scored on a fielder's choice and gave Fairfield the lead.
Fairfield's Billy Zolga homered with two outs in the eighth to push the lead to 5-3. Central cut it to 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth with a pair of ground rule doubles from Sportman sophomore and Turgeon. Turgeon's drove in the run, and was his second hit of the game.
Freshman lefty Jesse Frawley pitched the first six innings for the Blue Devils but didn't factor in the decision. He allowed five hits, three earned runs and struck out one. He walked three batters, including the first two to come to the plate in the seventh inning and eventually scored.
Freshman lefty Brendyn Karinchak moved to 2-0 on the season. He pitched the final inning and faced only three batters, retiring all three.
Central continues action at home on Friday, hosting LIU Brooklyn in a four-game Northeast Conference beginning at 3 p.m. The teams will also play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m., and a single game on Sunday, also at 1 p.m.
