Baseball Drops 9-2 Decision at Towson in Season Opener
Sophomore J.P. Sportman drive in two
Sophomore outfielder J.P. Sportman drove in a pair of runs but the Central Connecticut baseball team opened the 2012 season with a 9-2 loss on the road at Towson on Friday afternoon. The game was the first of a doubleheader against the Tigers.
Central will face Towson twice on Friday, and then travel to Navy for single games on Saturday and Sunday.
Sportman drove in the only two Central runs with a two-run home run in the fourth inning. He hit a pair of home runs as a freshman last season.
Central had six hits in the loss. Towson had 10, and scored in all but one inning to more to 2-5 on the season. Central is 0-1.
Three Blue Devil pitchers saw action. Senior Harry Glynn picked up the loss, pitching 2.2 innings while allowing six hits and giving up five runs, four of them earned.
Junior Chris Renzoni pitched 2.2 innings allowing four runs and three hits. Freshman Jesse Frawley pitched the final two thirds of an inning allowing just one hit.
Junior Mike Washburn had a pair of hits in his first game in a Blue Devil uniform. Seniors Mitch Wells and Danny Hickey each had a double.
