Baseball Goes 12 Innings and Completes Weekend Sweep of Quinnipiac

Junior Mitch Wells and senior Sean Miller-Jones each homered as the Central Connecticut baseball team completed a weekend sweep over Quinnipiac with a 7-5 12-inning victory on Sunday in Hamden. The two combined for 18 hits, 17 runs batted in and five home runs in the four-game series vs. the Bobcats. Central is now 23-17-1 on the season and 15-9 in Northeast Conference play.

The Blue Devils led 4-0 in the top of the sixth inning after posting one run in the second, two in the fourth and one more in the sixth. In the second inning freshman J.P. Sportman hit his second home run of the season to give Central the 1-0 lead.

They scored two in the fourth Central scored two unearned runs on a failed pick off attempt. With the bases loaded seniors Pat Epps and Miller-Jones each scored on the Quinnipiac miscue to make it 3-0.

The lead reached four in the sixth when Wells hit his second home run in as many days. It was the second home run of the game for the Blue Devils.

Quinnipiac scored one in the sixth inning to make it 4-1, but the Blue Devils got the run back in the top of the eighth when junior A.J. Lowers walked with the bases loaded.

The Bobcats answered with their biggest inning of the series, scoring four runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the score 5-5.

Junior Harry Glynne pitched seven innings allowed just four hits and one earned run while striking out five. He did not walk a batter and faced only 26 Quinnipiac hitters in his seven innings of work. Freshman Nick Boyd allowed four runs on three hits and recorded only one out in the game. Classmate Josh Ingham came in the stop the Quinnipiac rally in the eighth inning.

Miller-Jones homered to lead off the 12th inning, and junior Danny Hickey drove in a run with a single to push the lead to 7-5.

Ingham pitched the final 4.2 innings to earn the victory for the Blue Devils. He allowed just five hits and struck out eight to improve to 2-1 on the season.
