Baseball Drops Both Ends of Doubleheader at Monmouth, 2-0 and 3-2

The Central Connecticut baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader on road at Monmouth on Saturday. Central dropped the first game 2-0, and the second 3-2. With the losses Central falls to 8-10-1 overall and 5-5 in Northeast Conference play. The two teams will complete the weekend series on Sunday beginning at 12 noon.

The Hawks took the first game 2-0 as three Monmouth pitchers combined for the shutout and allowed just six hits to the Blue Devils.

Senior Sean Miller-Jones and freshman J.P. Sportman each had two hits in the game. Sportman had the only extra-base hit, a double. Central advanced just one runner past second base in the game. In the fifth they had runners on first and third but a pair of strikeouts ended the threat. The had two more runners on in the sixth but a double play ended the inning.

Sophomore Todd Savatsky had another strong outing on the mound, but he picked up his first loss of the season. He went six innings and allowed eight hits and two earned runs while striking out five. Junior Harry Glynne pitched the final two inning allowing just one hit.

In game two the Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI single from junior Jake Matuszak. The Hawks tied the game 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the inning off of Blue Devil senior starter Dave Krasnowiecki.

Monmouth scored a single unearned run in the sixth inning following a throwing error against the Blue Devils with two outs in the inning.

Central tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the seventh inning. With one out Miller-Jones doubled. He scored on a two-out single from junior Mitch Wells. The Hawks scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to earn the victory.

Krasnowiecki pitched 6.1 innings allowing 10 hits and two earned run while striking out five.

The two teams will finish the weekend series with a pair of game on Sunday beginning at noon. The first game will be nine innings and will start at 12 noon.
