Wells Hits Sixth Home Run of Season as Baseball Beats Marist on Saturday

Sophomore third baseman Mitch Wells hit a three-run home run and the Central Connecticut State University baseball team improved to 19-16 overall this season with a 7-1 victory at home over Marist on Saturday. Sophomore lefty Jack Greenhouse improved to 3-1 on the season. He pitched eight innings allowing just one run on nine hits while striking out four Marist batters.

The Red Foxes struck first with a single run in the top of the second inning. Dan Zlotnick singled to right field with two outs to score the game's first run.

Central took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the inning. Junior Pat Epps and senior Tommy Meade led off the inning with singles to put runners on first and second. Sophomore Mitch Wells hit his sixth home run of the season deep to right field to give Central the 3-0 lead.

The lead reached 5-1 in the third inning when Central scored two runs on just one hit. Meade had an RBI single and freshman Chris Renzoni walked with the bases loaded to drive in the second run.

Central scored a single run in the sixth. Freshman Andy Lalli grounded into a double play and Wells, who had doubled, scored on the play. They added a run in the seventh when senior Anthony Scialdone doubled with two outs and later scored on a wild pitch.

Epps, Meade and Wells each finished the game with two hits. Wells drove in three runs with his sixth home run of the year in the second inning.

Greenhouse was impressive in his outing. He did allow baserunners but stranded 11 Marist batters in his eight innings of work.

The Blue Devils return to action on Tuesday afternoon at Hartford for a single nine-inning game. The game time has been moved to 2 p.m. in West Hartford (originally scheduled for 3 p.m.).
