Central Baseball Holds #20 UConn to Five Hits in 7-3 Win on Wednesday

The Central Connecticut State University baseball team went on the road and topped No. 20 UConn on Wednesday afternoon, snapping the nation's longest winning streak in the process. The Blue Devils, now 18-15 overall, had seven different players drive in a run on the day. Two Blue Devil pitchers held the Huskies to just five hits in the game. Central returns to action on Friday at Marist at 3 p.m.

Central struck first with four runs in the top of the second inning while sending eight men to the plate. Junior Pat Epps led off the inning with his ninth home run of the season. Senior Kyle Zarotney doubled down the left field line to score a run, and the freshman Chris Renzoni grounded out to score the third run of the inning. Junior Sean Miller-Jones singled home the fourth run of the inning, scoring Zarotney.

The lead reached 7-0 for the Blue Devils with two runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth. In the fifth, sophomore Mitch Wells singled to left to score the first run. Senior Richie Tri singled to drive in the second run and made it 6-0.

In the sixth, senior Anthony Scialdone became the seventh different Blue Devil to drive in a run in the game.

UConn got a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 7-3. They would be the only runs allowed in the game by the two Blue Devil pithers.

Lefty Jason Foster picked up the win for the Blue Devils, pitching the first five innings and allowing three earned runs on just three hits. He struck out three. Junior Dave Krasnowiecki pitched the final four innings for the Blue Devils to earn the save. Krasnowiecki faced only 14 batters in his four innings. He allowed just two hits and struck out one to earn his first save of the season.

Seven different Blue Devils drove in a run in the win. Epps and Tri each had three hits to lead the 15-hit attack for the Blue Devils. Scialdone, Wells and senior Tommy Meade each had two hits.

The Blue Devils return to action on Friday at Marist beginning at 3 p.m. On Saturday they will host the Red Foxes at 1 p.m. in New Britain.
