Eight-Run Fifth Inning Leads Blue Devils to Saturday Victory Over Mount St. Mary's
Central Connecticut scored eight runs in the fifth inning on their way to a 15-3 victory over Mount St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon. Senior lefty Derek Roberts pitched eight innings allowing three runs and eight hits to improve to a team-best 6-1 on the season. With the win the Blue Devils improve to 23-18 overall and 13-10 in the Northeast Conference. The Mount falls to 21-23 overall and 13-9 in the league.
Central Connecticut scored eight runs in the fifth inning on
their way to a 15-3 victory over Mount St. Mary's on Saturday
afternoon. Senior lefty Derek Roberts pitched eight innings
allowing three runs and eight hits to improve to a team-best 6-1 on
the season. With the win the Blue Devils improve to 23-18 overall
and 13-10 in the Northeast Conference. The Mount falls to 21-23
overall and 13-9 in the league.
The Mount took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Central Connecticut answered in the bottom of the first inning with
three runs to take a 3-1 lead. With one out senior Casey
Walko walked and went to second when junior Anthony Scialadone
reached on an error. Sophomore Pat Epps
singled through the left side to score Walko and tie the score. A
double down the left field line by junior Richie
Tri scored Scialdone and have the Blue Devils the 2-1 edge. An
error on a ground ball to the second baseman by junior Tommy
Meade scored the third run of the inning.
A sacrifice fly in the second inning cut the lead to 3-2. On the
play a runner was thrown out going from second to third, ending the
inning.
With two outs in the third inning the Blue Devils scored a pair of
runs to make it 5-2. Meade singled and scored on a deep triple to
right center field by senior catcher Sean
Parker. Parker scored when a single up the middle by Wells hit
the second base bag and allowed both runners to advance
safely.
A lead off home run in the fourth by Shane Eyler, his 14th of the
year, cut it to 5-3. The sixth run of the game for the Blue Devils
scored in the bottom of the inning. Epps walked, went to second on
a wild pitch and scored on a single up the middle by Tri, his
second RBI of the game.
An eight-run fifth inning moved the score to 14-3. Four straight
singles to begin the inning scored the first run. Walko singled to
score Parker, who led off the inning with a bunt single. A
sacrifice fly to right field by Epps and the third run scoring
single of the game for Tri brought two more home for the Blue
Devils. With two men on, Schillaci doubled to deep right field to
score two more runs and give CCSU the eight run advantage. A deep
double by Meade scored Schillaci and a double down the left field
line, the second hit of the inning for Parker, scored Schillaci
with the seventh run of the inning. Wells' fourth single of the
game scored the eighth run. He was thrown out at second base
trying to stretch the single into a double.
Senior catcher Sean Connors doubled off the right center field
wall in the eighth inning to score the 15th run for the Blue
Devils.
The Blue Devils return to action on Monday at UConn beginning at 3
p.m.
