Mount St. Mary's Wins Halted Game on Saturday Morning in New Britain

Mount St. Mary's hit a two-run home run in the top of the 10th inning to come away with an 11-9 victory on Saturday morning. The game was originally halted on Thursday night at 11 p.m. due to dense fog in the New Britain area. Play resumed on Saturday morning in the top of the eighth inning with the Blue Devils leading 7-6. With the loss the Blue Devils fall to 22-18 overall and 12-10 in the Northeast Conference. The Mount improves to 21-22 overall and 13-8 in league play.

The Mount struck first with a single run in the top off the first inning. Central Connecticut answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. Junior Sean Allaire singled and went to second on a wild pitch. Following a pair of outs, sophomore Pat Epps homered to right center field to give CCSU the lead. The long ball was the second of the season for Epps.

Mount St. Mary's tied the game at 2-2 with an unearned run in the top of the fourth inning.

The Blue Devils answered in the bottom of the fourth. Epps singled to lead off the inning and went to third on a double by senior Jay Schillaci. Junior Richie Tri singled to center field to score both runners and make it 4-2. Schillaci's double ran his hitting streak to a career-best 15 games, the second-longest streak of the season for the Blue Devils.

The Mount scored a single run in the fifth to make it 4-3.

Scialdone ran his hitting streak to 28 games in the bottom of the fifth inning (his streak ended at 28 games on Friday). With one out, senior Casey Walko walked and then scored when Scialdone doubled down the right field line, making it 5-3. The hitting streak is the longest since the Blue Devils joined the Northeast Conference, and also the longest in the 10 seasons under head coach Charlie Hickey.

A two-out, two-run, pinch hit home run by Mike Matta tied the game at 5-5 for the Mount in the sixth.

The Blue Devils answered in their half of the inning. Junior Tommy Meade singled and went to second on a walk to senior Sean Parker. Both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly to center field by freshman Mitch Well plated Meade, and an RBI single by Allaire scored Parker to make it 7-5.

Mount St. Mary's cut it to one with a run in the top of the seventh inning.

On Saturday, prior to the regularly scheduled nine-inning game, the Mount put three runs on the board in the top of the eighth inning to take a 9-7 lead, their first lead of the game. The Blue Devils answered with a pair of runs to tie the game at 9-9. Tri led off with a single and went to second on a single by Meade. With one out Tri scored on a single by Wells. A fielder's choice by Allaire scored the second run to tie the score.

A two-run home run in the top of the 10th inning proved to be the difference for the Mount in the 11-9 win.
