Blue Devil Baseball Drops 9-7 Decision to UConn at Beehive Field

The Central Connecticut baseball team dropped a 9-7 non-conference decision to Connecticut on Wednesday after at Beehive Field in New Britain. The loss snaps a seven-game winning streak by the Blue Devils and drops them to 20-13 overall this season. Sophomore Pat Epps drove in three runs in the loss and senior Sean Connors hit a two-run home run. Junior Anthony Scialdone drove in two runs and ran his hitting streak to 23 games with a double in the seventh inning. CCSU returns to action on Friday hosting Fairleigh Dickinson at 3 p.m. at Palmer Field in Middletown.

The Huskies got on the board first with three unearned runs in the top of the first inning off of freshman starter Jason Foster. With the bases loaded and two out Matt Burnett doubled to deep left field to plate all three runners and give UConn the early lead.

Central Connecticut loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the second inning but a 1-2-3 double play ended the threat and kept the 3-0 score.

The Huskies plated two more unearned runs off of freshman Pat Robinson in the top of the fourth inning to up their lead to 5-0. A two-run single in the top of the fifth by Peter Fatse pushed the Husky lead to 7-0.

The Blue Devils scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Husky lead to 7-3. Junior Anthony Scialdone reached on a fielder's choice to drive in the first run and sophomore Pat Epps singled to left field to plate two more and cut the lead to four.

UConn scored two runs in the top of the sixth, upping their lead to 9-3. A two-run double by Mike Nemeth scored a pair and gave UConn two runs for the third straight inning.

Epps drove in his third run in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to 9-4. With two outs in the inning Scialdone doubled down the right field line, extending his hitting streak to 23 games. Epps singled up the middle to score Scialdone.

In the bottom of the eighth inning Connors homered to left center field, cutting the lead to 9-6. Junior Kyle Zarotney had doubled with one out in the inning and he scored on the homer. Following the home run pinch hitter Angelo Buscemi reached on an error and junior Sean Allaire's bunt single put runners on first and second. A single by first baseman Tommy Meade loaded the bases before Scialdone's sacrifice fly cut it to 9-7.

The Blue Devils return to action this weekend hosting Fairleigh Dickinson in a Northeast Conference four-game series. The two teams will play the first game at 3 p.m. on Friday at Palmer Field in Middletown, CT before returning to Beehive Field for a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
