Baseball Drops 13-10 Non-Conference Decision Versus Holy Cross Tuesday Night at Beehive Field
Central Connecticut (13-11) lost, 13-10, in a non-conference home game versus Holy Cross (13-19). Junior Sean Allaire had a three-run triple and a double to lead the Blue Devils. Senior Jay Schillaci added a solo home run, and junior Richie Tri and sophomore Pat Epps each singled and doubled in the defeat.
Central Connecticut (13-11) lost, 13-10, in a non-conference home game versus Holy Cross (13-19) at Beehive Field in New Britain. Junior Sean Allaire had a three-run triple and a double to lead the Blue Devils. Senior Jay Schillaci added a solo home run, and junior Richie Tri and sophomore Pat Epps each singled and doubled in the defeat.
Holy Cross manufactured a run in the top of the first. Sophomore Brendan McRea led off with a single, stole second and crossed the plate on an RBI single by senior Jake Gorman. Central Connecticut matched the effort in its half of the first. Allaire doubled to start the inning. He moved to third on a ground out and scored on an RBI single by junior Anthony Scialdone.
The Crusaders added two runs in the third inning off junior Donny White, who relieved Blue Devil freshman starter Pat Robinson. Three straight singles produced the first run. The second scored on a wild pitch. Central Connecticut again tied the game in the bottom half. With one out, Allaire was hit by a pitch. He moved to third on a single by senior Casey Walko, and both scored on an error.
Holy Cross went back in front with three runs in the third inning, but Schillaci's solo shot trimmed the Blue Devil deficit to 6-4. The Crusaders stretched the lead to 12-4 on three hits, two walks and a pair of hit batsmen in the sixth. Senior Tim Hughes had a two-run double to highlight the inning. Holy Cross added a run in the seventh inning.
The Blue Devils scored four times in the bottom of the eighth inning. Epps doubled to start the inning, and Allaire cleared the bases six batters later with a triple to left field. CCSU added two runs in the ninth. Tri doubled in the first, and pinch-hitting senior Sean Parker drove in the second with a ground out. Junior Tommy Arrigg recorded the final two outs to seal the Holy Cross win.
Freshman Nate Sturgis took the loss on the mound for CCSU. He was one of seven pitchers for the Blue Devils. Freshman John Pedrotty earned the win for the Crusaders. He surrendered four runs, two earned, on seven hits in six innings of work. Junior Matt Perry led the Holy Cross offense with a 4-for-6 day at the plate. He scored four runs and had a two-run double.
Central Connecticut will return to Northeast Conference play
this weekend. The Blue Devils are scheduled to play four times at
Quinnipiac beginning with a nine-inning game on Friday, Apr. 17 at
3 p.m. CCSU and the Bobcats will then play two seven-inning games
on Saturday, Apr. 18 beginning at noon. The final game of the
series, another nine-inning affair, is slated for noon on Sunday,
Apr. 19.
