Baseball Manages Split With Binghamton on Saturday in New Britain

Central Connecticut scored three runs in the final two innings in the second game of a doubleheader to give the Blue Devils a 4-3 win and a split against Binghamton on Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats won the first game 20-0. With the split the Blue Devils are now 8-6 on the season. Binghamton is 7-9. Central Connecticut returns to action on Sunday at 12 p.m. with a single game beginning at noon against Vermont. The game will be played at Beehive Field in New Britain.

In game one the Bearcats took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Corey Taylor homered down the left field line off of Blue Devil starter Derek Roberts.
They plated three more runs in the top of the third inning, including the second home run of the game for Taylor. Kyle Klee drove in a run and Taylor followed with a two-run home run to left to up the lead to 4-0.

Binghamton picked up five more runs in the top of the fourth and chased Roberts from the game. Four different players drove in a run as the Bearcats sent nine batters to the plate, and took an 9-0 lead. The final run of the inning scored on a throwing error by reliever Donny White.

The Bearcats added two more runs in the top of the sixth to up the lead to 10-0. Peter Bregartner and Klee both hit solo home runs in the inning to make it 11-0. They scored nine more in the seventh to finish the scoring.

Roberts pitched 3.1 innings allowing eight hits, eight runs and struck out one batter. He walked one. Epps led the offense with his two hits, including his fifth double of the season.

In the second game Binghamton plated the first run of the game in the top of the first, and led 1-0. Central Connecticut answered and tied the game with a run in the bottom of the inning. With one out senior Casey Walko tripled to right field. He scored on an RBI groundout by classmate Jay Schillaci.

The Blue Devils loaded the bases on three consecutive infield singles in the bottom of the third inning, but a 1-2-3 double play ended the threat and the score remained tied at 1-1.

The Bearcats took a 2-1 lead with a run in the fourth. Ken Jacobi doubled home a run to give Binghamton the one-run lead. In the fifth inning they added their third run of the game following back-to-back hits, including an RBI triple by Jim Calderone.

Central Connecticut freshman right hander Todd Savatsky pitched 4.1 innings allowing five hits and three runs. He was relieved by Chris Chagnon with one out in the fifth inning, Chagnon retired the final two batters of the inning with a runner on third.

The Blue Devils tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run home run by Tri, his second of the season. Tri hit his shot to deep center field with two outs and a man on first, tying the game at 3-3.

The winning run scored on an error in the bottom of the seventh inning on a ball hit by Epps. With men on first and second and two outs the error allowed the winning run to score, giving CCSU the 4-3 win.

Chagnon pitched the final 2.2 innings for the Blue Devils and retired all right batters that he faced. In 8.2 innings of work this year he has allowed no runs and just five hits. He struck out three of the eight batters he faced. He is now 2-0 on the season.

Walko had three hits and a run scored in game two. Epps added a double and Schillaci had a hit and an RBI. Tri's two-run home run was his second of the season.

The Blue Devils return to action on Sunday at noon hosting Vermont at Beehive Field.
